108th CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNTS IN CALIFORNIA
Dec. 14, 2007 through Jan. 5, 2008
Each year between December 14th and January 5th, thousands of California birders participate in one or more of the 100-plus Christmas Bird Counts held in California. This holiday season join with thousands of birders who participate in this important citizen science effort across California. The one-day bird counts provide valuable data about the number of bird species and numbers of each species occurring within a set geographic area. Whether you just watch your bird feeder or spend a full day in the field with friends, it is a great way to have fun and gather important information on bird populations.
Participants are typically assigned to teams based on their bird identification skill level and endurance. A $5 participation fee defrays a portion of the cost of tabulating and publishing the count results by the National Audubon Society and Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Help is needed on many of these counts, so find one that interests you and contact the compiler for more information.
