Audubon California recently welcomed Chris Redfern, executive director of the San Diego Audubon Society, to its board of directors. Redfern, one of several Audubon chapter representatives on the board, was elected by his fellow Southern California chapter leaders.

“I’ve been passionate about the natural world my whole life,” says Redfern.

After spending a number of years pursuing an interest in fine art printmaking as an avenue to inspire others to protect the natural world, Redfern decided to follow a career path that allowed him to make a direct, positive impact on wildlife and habitat conservation.

He says that when he was offered a chance to join the San Diego Audubon Society three years ago, “I jumped at the chance.”

Redfern joins the board with the goal of expanding partnerships at all levels of the Audubon network, as well as other local and statewide environmental organizations. He believes these collaborations will allow California conservationists to leverage limited resources and take smarter, more directed conservation actions.

“Effective conservation work must include the involvement of local communities, so we can build public support that is so critical to ensuring the success of our conservation goals throughout California,” Redfern says. “Chapters represent Audubon’s interest at the community level, so they are at the heart of effective conservation. I’m glad the National Audubon Society increasingly recognizes the value of grassroots support. Together we can make the entire Audubon network a stronger and more effective voice for conservation.”

Audubon California Executive Director Glenn Olson says he’s enthusiastic about the contribution that Redfern can make to the organization.

“We’re looking forward to working with Chris in this new capacity,” says Olson. “He’s done great work in San Diego, and will be a valuable addition to the board.”
