The Yellow-billed Magpie has been named Audubon California’s 2009 Bird of the year after it received nearly 26 percent of all votes during our recent online survey. We created the designation this year to highlight the state’s remarkable birds and the conservation challenges many of them face. A.B. 708, which creates tough new penalties for poaching in California, recently passed through the Assembly’s Water, Parks, and Wildlife Committee on April 28. The bill still has a long way to go, and that’s why we’re asking folks to sign our petition calling on the Legislature to enact strong penalties for poaching.
Audubon California recently signed an agreement with property owners in Kern County to preserve a breeding colony of 5,000 to 10,000 rare Tricolored Blackbirds in a 30-acre wetland on private lands.
